AURORA | Dr. Gordon Davis is headed to the Middle East, albeit temporarily.

The executive director of the Aurora History Museum has been selected to lead the $13-million Iraq Cultural Heritage Project, an effort by the nonprofit International Relief and Development funded by the U.S. State Department via a U.S. Embassy grant.

Davis is scheduled to leave for Iraq later this month for an unspecified amount of time, and he plans to resume his duties at the Aurora History Museum upon his return, according to a statement from city spokeswoman Julie Patterson.

According to a press release, the project’s goal is to help expand the Iraq National Museum in Baghdad and other collections; the museum suffered major problems with looting immediately following the U.S. military invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Specifically, the Iraq Cultural Heritage Project will focus on developing both staff and infrastructure at the Iraqi museum, as well as improving galleries and storage facilities.

Davis also is charged with creating a Conservation and Historic Preservation Institute in the Kurdish capital of Erbil in conjunction with various U.S.-based museums and the U.S. National Park
